Someone else to do the job

We had to meet the secretary of our society today – to be told that the ‘committee’ has decided to disallow singles from continuing in the society. “Only families allowed”, the man said. “How do you define a family?”, I asked. “Husband/ wife – obviously”, he told me.

No, it’s not obvious.”, I replied. “Are 3 single sisters a family?”, I asked again.

Yes…I mean…no…I mean, there will be an interview…no singles allowed. You have to move out within a month.”

Well, when it comes to pressurizing people to get married, we don’t need families anymore. There are society committees to do the job.

hmmm I would suggest that all you singles living in rented acco form a kind of code of conduct so that due to a few bad elements the rest of the junta doesn't get labeled as troublesome. Came here via a link given by a friend!

Takes all kinds to make a world, doesn't it? Of the many cities I've lived in, one year was spent in Chennai. There was such an overwhelming majority that just shut their doors to single people. You had to be proper (read:married) to be considered a worthy tenant.
Recently we invited a swiss male colleague over to Delhi for a stint and he said he'd be coming with his "partner". This "partner" turned out to be a hefty, handle-bar moustached gentleman. I can so easily picture those steeped-in-tradition Chennai landlords reeling in disbelief seeing such "couples".
